Cuba tourism income up in 2011

Cuba’s National Office of Statistics has reported that tourism revenue for the country rose by 12.8 per cent in 2011, showing good recovery from the financial crisis and returning to levels enjoyed three years previously. Total income from tourism reached $2.5 billion in 2011, compared with $2.2 billion in 2010, and 2.7 million visitors were hosted, a seven-per-cent rise from the 2.5 million hosted in 2010. Although tourist arrivals had steadily increased in recent years, tourists had started to spend less money, a blow to one of Cuba’s major sources of income. The National Office of Statistics’ report also showed that overall trade of services and goods rose reached $32 billion in 2011, up 24.7 per cent from the previous year.
